Belorusneft to build 50MW solar power plant in Rechitsa District, Belarus

On 26 August the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee decided to allocate two land plots with the total area of over 110ha for the Belarusian industrial group Belorusneft to build a photovoltaic power plant. The land will be rented by the company for 50 years, BelTA has learned.

The alternative energy facility will be located in Rechitsa District close to the company’s operations base. Once the designed capacity is reached, the power plant will be able to generate 50MW. The performance will make it a unique power-generating facility of the kind in the CIS states.

Since oil extraction is declining in Belarus, the construction of the photovoltaic power plant will become an alternative business avenue for Belorusneft in an effort to ensure the national energy security. Preparations at the land plot where solar cells will be located are supposed to start this year.

According to previously announced plans this year the Belarusian natural gas processing plant and the Svetlogorsk department for drilling operations are supposed to commission photovoltaic power plants with the total capacity of 4.3MW. The facilities will allow generating an extra 4.3 million kWh of electricity in 2014.

The industrial group Belorusneft was founded in 1966. The company specializes in surveying, prospecting and developing oil fields, drilling wells, extracting oil and associated petroleum gas. The company operates as part of foreign oil industries, too, including Russia, Ukraine, Venezuela, and Ecuador.
